History
William Morris was inspired to create the well-known Strawberry Thief textile pattern after he observed thrushes stealing fruits from his countryside garden home, Kelmscott Manor, in the late 19th century. The colourful pattern printed on the cotton fabric, Strawberry Thief, was made using the labour-intensive indigo discharge technique with the idea of being used for furnishings, such as curtains or wall hangings.
The design was registered in 1883, and it was expensive to purchase fabric, nevertheless, it became one of Morris & Co.’s most commercially successful textiles and is currently William Morris’s most recognisable design.
